To misuse language is to use it the way politicians and advertisers do, for profit, without taking responsibility for what the words mean. Language used as a means to get power or make money goes wrong: it lies. Language used as an end in itself, to sing a poem or tell a story, goes right, goes towards the truth.

A writer is a person who cares what words mean, what they say, how they say it. Writers know words are their way towards truth and freedom, and so they use them with care, with thought, with fear, with delight. By using words well they strengthen their souls. Story-tellers and poets spend their lives learning that skill and art of using words well. And their words make the souls of their readers stronger, brighter, deeper. - Ursula K. LeGuin

You are correct: the most valuable thing you have to share is your voice. Your writings sometimes leave me with a feeling of sadness and an intensity of emotion I find difficult to reconcile. But at the same time I'm often forced to recognize we all live in a world that has moved away from reason and common sense and it is up to each of us to offer some small effort to hit some kind of reset button. Your writing helps me do that. I'm very grateful for you, and others like you, who are willing to put their perspectives on the world domain at their own emotional cost. It gives me hope.Bill Jabashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00756121999509167765noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8725035943025805254.post-40653872632711643712018-02-18T07:35:04.095-06:002018-02-18T07:35:04.095-06:00Diva, I cannot thank you enough for your comment. ...Diva, I cannot thank you enough for your comment. It’s terrifying to bare my soul these days in such a noisy world, one that feels unsafe to a vulnerable, sensitive heart. But I keep telling myself that the most valuable thing I can give to others is my voice, words to help us feel less alone, words to remind us there is indeed still so much goodness, words to give us hope. Thank you so much for your words. It means a lot. I have found that I must limit my exposure to news and media outlets lest my heart crumble completely. I do prefer the newspaper as I can skip around and avoid those articles that I know will wound my soul. I suppose it may seem like burying my head in the sand but I stay current enough with what is going on. I look for the happy moments, the ones that show the true compassion and love the human race has to offer. Sadly those things are delegated to the final two minutes of the nightly news. I have come to realize that the news media sensationalizes everything going on in the world, bad news sells. Good news showcasing the best of mankind rarely does. Are there atrocities playing out across the globe, certainly, they have for as long as we have had civilizations. Now we are bombarded with it all day long, without ceasing. It can be too much for a sensitive heart to bear. Just as I would shield my children and now grandchildren from such things I now find I have to protect my own heart. I truly believe when we narrow our view and look at our own families, neighborhoods and communities we can find so much kindness and love that might go overlooked when we are focused on the media. Multiply each of our own microcosms and experiences by how many of us inhabit the planet and you can believe that the world is inherently beautiful and kind and good. That is the world that deserves our focus, there is always hope!Diva Kreszlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16278102837785791249noreply@blogger.com
